Metz Cathedral its celebrating its 800-year anniversary in 2020. To mark this occasion, the Musicology Department at the University of Lorraine (Metz) under the aegis of the CRULH (Centre de recherche universitaire lorrain d’histoire, Lorraine University Historical Research Centre) is organising a symposium centred around a type of building that has been inspiring specific musical practices and works since the Middle Ages through to the present day. How does a cathedral at the heart of the city become not just a place of worship, but also a place synonymous with musical lives and practices? In what way has the cathedral been a source of artistic inspiration in music?
